In celebration of International Women’s Day on 08th March the Federal Ombudsperson Secretariat for Protection against Harassment (FOSPAH) in collaboration with the National University for Medical Sciences (NUMS) organised an awareness seminar on the law of harassment and to champion the cause of gender equality and women empowerment. Ms. Meher Jamy, Law Officer FOSPAH gave a presentation on the law pertaining to harassment and apprised students about the methods available for filing a complaint and the procedure adopted by FOSPAH in deciding complaints. Ms. Jamy also conveyed the Federal Ombudsperson against Harassment’s message to the students on the significance of International Women’s Day which is observed annually to reiterate the world governments commitment to eliminating gender inequality and empowering women in all fields. In her address Brig Shazia, Director Medical Administration NUMS informed the team of FOSPAH that there is an active harassment cell functional in the university which regularly hears complaints. She also suggested that the Higher Education Commission’s Policy regarding filing a complaint within three months must be revisited to ensure that the maximum number of complaints are filed and investigated. The closing remarks were made by Brig Asif, Dean Student Affairs NUMS who expressed that the university management has a zero tolerance policy for harassment and that regular awareness sessions are necessary to achieve sustainable change in the attitudes of society towards harassment.
