Ms. Fauzia Viqar, Federal Ombudsperson, spoke at an awareness seminar at Quaid-i-Azam University on the Elimination of Harassment
I hope that the struggle against gender-based violence does not start and end with the 16 Days of Activism but continues for the entire year - Ms. Fauzia Viqar, Federal Ombudsperson against Harassment On 07.12.2023 the Centre of Excellence in Gender Studies at Quaid-i-Azam University arranged an awareness seminar on the Elimination of Harassment at the School of Sociology. Ms. Fauzia Viqar, Federal Ombudsperson against Harassment, was the Chief Guest at the seminar which also included Dr. Aisha Anees Malik, Director Center of Excellence in Gender Studies; Professor Dr. Hazir Ullah, Director School of Sociology; and Ms. Meher Jamy, Law Officer FOSPAH along with approximately 60 students and members of faculty. In her presentation Ms. Meher explained the provisions of the Protection against Harassment of Women at the Workplace Act, 2010 (Act). She informed the audience that harassment is of two kinds: sexual and gender-based. That students are now encompassed in the definition of employees and can also file complaints of harassment before their departmental Inquiry Committees. Ms. Viqar in her address apprised the audience that the present seminar has been held as part of the 16 Days of Activism campaign which aims to address gender-based violence. She informed the audience about the State’s commitment to ending violence and harassment against women and girls and the beneficial laws that have recently been enacted by the Government to address the historical marginalisation of women. The speeches were followed by an interactive question answer session in which the students and faculty inquired about the protections available to underprivileged sections of society, including persons residing in Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan; the average time in which cases are decided at FOSPAH; and the procedure adopted by FOSPAH in cases where evidence is not readily present. In his speech Dr. Hazir elaborated upon his research project being conducted in collaboration with Austin University, UK on ‘Safe Campuses in Pakistan.’ Dr. Hazir also played an informative video in this regard. In her remarks Dr. Aisha pledged her commitment to the cause of gender equality and urged the students to spread FOSPAH’s message of dignity, equality and respect with their fellow colleagues, friends and family members. She also read out a statement from the Vice Chancellor of Quaid-i-Azam Univeristy wherein he encouraged faculty, staff and students to show support, raise awareness and take action against harassment.
